The anticipation is building as the World Music Contest (WMC) opens the doors to its 20th edition in July 2026! This anniversary is not only another chapter in the history of the WMC, but also an opportunity for musicians from all over the world to showcase their talents and become part of an unforgettable festival. Bands and ensembles can now submit their applications – and the interest is already enormous.
Review and new highlight
The WMC is considered the heart of the brass music scene and attracts musicians from various nations. The organization expects more than 300 participants for the anniversary edition, a significant increase compared to the last festival. Björn Bus, Artistic Manager of the WMC, speaks of “great interest” and emphasizes that requests have been received from all over the world, from Asia to North America. This shows how diverse and adaptable the brass music scene is and how much it is looking forward to this encounter.
Compulsory works: a boost for new compositions
An important part of the contest rules is the announcement of the compulsory works for each division. The focus is on new compositions, with ten of the twelve compulsory works having been written in the last three years. By promoting new works, the WMC aims to inject creative spirit and innovation into the participants. Particularly exciting is the commissioning of two renowned composers, Kevin Houben and Liz Lane, to create exclusive pieces for the Fanfare and Youth Divisions.
But not only new works are on the program. The revival of “Epiphany” by Henk Badings, one of the great names in brass music, is another highlight. This timeless work will be presented in a new form and serves as a tribute to the roots of the festival.
Changes and innovations in the regulations
In order to meet the needs of participants, some changes have been made to the regulations. For example, it is no longer necessary to include nonmusical elements in the programs and the submission of an artistic portfolio is no longer mandatory. These adjustments are intended to give the artists more freedom for creativity and expression, while the competitions in the highest divisions will continue to take place in the tried-and-tested Prelims Finals system.
The creation of more space for youth orchestras, which will be included in a new youth division, is also pleasing. This demonstrates the WMC’s efforts to promote the next generations of musicians and offer them a platform.
Interested parties should be quick!
For all those who would like to take part in the WMC 2026, it is important to register in good time. Bands and ensembles have been able to register their participation via the WMC platform since April 1.
