A christmas choral document from the Salzkammergut

The inner Salzkammergut stretches from Ebensee (Upper Austria) to Bad Aussee (Styria) and is rich in a grown folk culture that radiates far beyond the borders. From Advent to Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, (2 February), many houses have elaborate nativity scenes. From this the custom of the “Krippenliedersingens” (nativity song singing) developed, which was documented in the 1920s by the Ebensee teacher Ferdinand Schaller in his “Krippenliederbuch aus Ebensee” (nativity song book from Ebensee).

Under the direction of Rudolf Hödl, the male choral society “AGV Kohlröserl Ebensee” has released a CD from this collection to complement this Schaller songbook. The CD “Weihnacht” (Christmas) contains the best-known songs, together with other Christmas songs that the Gesangsverein likes to sing, by Ludwig van Beethoven, Salzburg’s Tobi Reiser, Lorenz Maierhofer and others.

The CD is rounded off by the wind ensemble “Globaldenker” and the string semester from the Ebensee State Music School. The CD can be ordered directly from the Männer-Gesangsverein, Chorleiter Rudolf Hödl, 4802 Ebensee, Strandbadstr. 52/1, Tel. +43 (0)664 3856358.
