Every year, the autumn season in Merano delights with its magnificent play of colours. The leaves of the trees shining in bright red and yellow hues make the green spaces of the city a real eye-catcher. The taste of roasted chestnuts has always been part of autumn in Merano. Hearty food in convivial company and a rustic setting makes “Törggelen” a popular autumn tradition among locals and guests alike. This period of the year also includes several highlights of Merano’s events. Most of these events are part of the series “Merano Autumn” and/or the “Autumn Delights”, which also includes the neighbouring villages.
A real event is the Merano Grape Festival, which takes place every year on the third weekend in October. Every year since 1886, the Grape Festival has been a moment of joy and thanksgiving for the good harvest in autumn. South Tyrolean customs are lived and shown at the Grape Festival. Diverse initiatives on Saturday and Sunday show the authentic and young face of the historical festival. This year, the Merano Grape Festival will take place on 15 and 16 October 2022. The traditional procession, in which numerous music bands, floats, rifle and traditional costume associations take part every year, can also take place again this year. The procession will start on Sunday, 16 October at 2.15 pm at the Vinschgauer Tor! This harvest festival is a harmonious mixture of traditional performances, autumnal South Tyrolean specialities, good wine and lots of music.
If you want to musically present the Merano autumn magic, you can do so with the composition of the same name by Emil Hornof. The composer is a true South Tyrolean, born in Merano in 1897 and died in Bressanone in 1966. In 1951 he took over the district bandmaster position in Brixen in the Association of South Tyrolean Music Bands and from there he took turns leading several bands.
