Catalan Wind Music: World premiere recording with Barcelona Symphonic Band

Catalan Wind Music – a representative selection of Catalan music of the 20th century

The three colourful works of this world premiere recording are a representative selection of Catalan music of the 20th century, including popular Cobla band instruments such as the Tibel and the Tenora with their bright, penetrating reed reeds and the flabiol flute with its high tones.

This CD brings together the three most important Catalan composers Manuel Oltra, Juli Garreta and Joan Lluis Moraleda. Manuel Ostra’s music is deeply rooted in Catalan tradition, and “L’Alimara” is a symphonic poem with medieval echoes. Both Juli Garreta’sSuite empordanesa” and Joan Lluí’s Moralda’s epic “Tirant lo Blanc” are considered milestones in Catalan symphonic music, leading to the fights, celebrations and knightly romances of their heroes of the same name.

Salvator Brotons, himself a composer, skilfully conducts the Barcelona Symphonic Band. Dr. Salvador Brotons comes from a family of musicians in Barcelona. He began his flute studies with his father and later continued at the Conservatori de Música de Barcelona, where he passed his exams (títols superiors) in flute, composition and conducting. His teachers included Antoni Ros-Marbà (conducting), Xavier Montsalvatge (composition) and Manuel Oltra (instrumentation). In 1985 he received a “Fullbright” scholarship and moved to the USA, where he completed his doctorate in music at Florida State University.

The CD “Catalan Wind Music” has been released in the series “Wind Band Classics” by Naxos.
